Understanding the Role of Buildings in a Smart Microgrid
A ‘smart microgrid’ refers to a distribution network for electrical energy, starting from electricity generation to its transmission and storage with the ability to respond to dynamic changes in energy supply through co-generation and demand adjustments. At the scale of a small town, a microgrid is connected to the wide-area electrical grid that may be used for ‘baseline’ energy supply; or in the extreme case only as a storage system in a completely self-sufficient microgrid. Distributed generation, storage and intelligence are key components of a smart microgrid. In this paper, we examine the significant role that buildings play in energy use and its management in a smart microgrid. In particular, we discuss the relationship that IT equipment has on energy usage by buildings, and show that control of various building subsystems (such as IT and HVAC) can lead to significant energy savings.

Simple GUI Design for Monitoring of a Remotely Operated Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
This paper describes the process of designing a GUI (Graphical user interface) for a remotely operated quadrotor UAV. In the process of building this quadrotor project, SolidWork 2009 software was used to develop the prototype before the actual model is made. An IMU sensor is used to measure the orientation of the quadrotor which is processed by a microcontroller to indicate the current orientation of the quadrotor before being transmitted to ground station wirelessly.

Study on Interaction Behaviors of Micro-Autonomous Vehicles

Night vision pedestrian detection using a forwardlooking infrared camera
This paper describes a night vision pedestrian detection system for autonomous vehicles using an onboard forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera. Much emphasis has been placed on real-time processing requirements and robustness of the system under different scenarios. At low level, the Haarlike features are used to discriminate infrared pedestrians. AdaBoost learning algorithm is employed to select the most class relevant infrared pedestrian features.

Automatic Road Environment Classification
The ongoing development autonomous vehicles and adaptive vehicle dynamics present in many modern vehicles has generated a need for road environment classification—i.e., the ability to determine the nature of the current road or terrain environment from an onboard vehicle sensor. In this paper, we investigate the use of a low-cost camera vision solution capable of urban, rural, or off-road classification based on the analysis of color and texture features extracted from a driver’s perspective camera view.

Attentive motion sensor for mobile robotic applications
We present a compact VISIOn sensor comprIsmg a one-dimensional array of adaptive photo-receptors, spatiotemporal feature extraction circuits, feature normalization circuits, and an attentional readout circuit that selects the most salient region in the feature map.

Joint registration and super-resolution with omnidirectional images
This paper addresses the reconstruction of high resolution omnidirectional images from multiple low resolution images with inexact registration. When omnidirectional images from low resolution vision sensors can be uniquely mapped on the 2-sphere, such a reconstruction can be described as a transform domain super-resolution problem in a spherical imaging framework. We describe how several spherical images with arbitrary rotations in the SO(3) rotation group contribute to the reconstruction of a high resolution image with help of the Spherical Fourier Transform (SFT).

Recognition of a Person’s State Using FG Vision Sensor

Measuring Technology of Rail Vehicle’s Offset Caused by Vibration
On-line measuring the displacement of the running rolling stock relative to the track, is the base that rationally determines leaving space between the train and the structure limit. The scheme based on machine vision for measuring the displacement is brought forward. Four dynamic offset sensors are non-collinearly mounted on the car-body. Each sensor composed of a linear Charge Couple Device (that is the CCD), a lens and four mirrors is a monocular stereo vision system.

Development of Two-type AUVs for Deep-Sea Carbon Dioxide Observations and Hydrothermal Plume Exploration
JAMSTEC has been developing two-type autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs): a cruising AUV and a working AUV, since last October. These vehicles will perform carbon dioxide (CO2) observations and hydrothermal plume exploration up to depth of 3,000 meters. The cruising AUV (about 4 m long, 2 tons in weight) is equipped with three major observation devices: a multi-beam echo sounder, side-scan sonar, and a CO2-pH hybrid sensor.
